NEW YEAR, BETTER YOU!

In this New Year, instead of aiming for a “new you”, how about a “better version of yourself”? Let’s start with your job! A month ago, I have promised you another kick ass interview look and share some interview tips! Well, I always keep my promises ;) As I already mentioned, 1st impressions are everything and if you put your best foot forward, your chances of getting the job increase exponentially! This stunning Banana Republic Navy Crochet Dress & a structured coat can definitely get you that second interview to land that dream job! It’s a look that’s classy & fierce, yet shows that you’re trendy and confident – which brings me to tip #1!

Tip 1: CONFIDENCE & PERSONALITY: Ladies, when you step though that door, your mindset should be: I got this! If you made it to the interview, it means they like your CV already. So this will all be about your confidence & personality. Think of it this way, 50% of the interview should be you selling your skills and know-how to them, but the other 50% should be the company selling itself to you. It’s not just about if you’re a good fit, but is the company a good fit for you? Come prepared with relevant questions about the company & the position. If you show that you are confident & that you are in fact the right person for the job, trust me, you’re 90% there!

Tip 2: HONESTY: I remember my very 1st job in the corporate world. I was applying for an internship/scholarship at a big auditing firm and they asked me the milion dollar Q: “Why do you want to be an accountant”? It still makes me laugh thinking about it. I mean, I could have said that my grandfather was an accountant, my father was an accountant and well I want to honor traditions, bla bla bla. That would have been a complete lie. I was the 1st aspiring accountant in the family and it was my very 1st semester at Mcgill University. So, my reply was the honest truth: I can sit here and tell you that it’s my long life dream, but I don’t know of and kid who dreams of being an accountant (laughs – always a good sign when they laugh with you). The truth is that I wanted a job that can cross borders as I love to travel, and well, it turns out I’m really good at accounting – it comes easily to me, plus it’s a field I can apply anywhere in the world. Score! Feel out your audience & be honest.

Tip 3: CREATIVITY – no cookie cutter answers please! No matter whether you are applying to be an accountant or a designer, they are always looking for creativity. Being a perfectionist is not a flaw! Sounds familiar? It’s the answer everyone gives to “what is your biggest flaw”. It’s a copy/paste cliche answer and employers don’t want to hear it! Now, don’t say you’re bad at decision making or that you’re bad with excel (if you are, learn it quick), but at the same time be honest and creative. Most importantly, make sure to show how you overcome your weakness! For example, “Sometimes I get nervous talking to large groups, but I usually tell myself that I got this and these people are here to listen to what I have to say, so there is nothing to worry about. Once I start talking, I’m over the nervousness”.

Hope this helps! Now, go get that dream job chix!
